What to expect in psychotherapy with Dr. Miji Um
Evidence-informed
I provide psychotherapy informed by evidence-based treatments (EBT). EBTs have extensive research data showing their effectiveness in improving mental health symptoms. I draw from Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, and trauma-informed treatments including Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy.
Culturally sensitive, social justice-oriented
Psychotherapy that I provide is “evidence-informed” because I may not follow the exact protocols or manualized treatments “as is.” I do this because I recognize that your unique lived experiences that led you to seek therapy are the product of cultural and/or socio-political contexts in which you express your identities. These contexts make up who you are as a person and following EBTs “as is” may not fully provide what you need in therapy. I approach my therapy sessions with you in mind and I flexibly apply the core principles of EBTs using culturally sensitive, social justice-oriented lens.
“You”-centered collaboration
I see you as the expert in your own life. I honor you as who you are. I work with you as a team. I stay away from advice giving.
Experimentation to rediscover you
You feel stuck and exhausted in your current way of living. You don’t know what more you can do. If you have noticed this, it may mean that your approach so far is not working for you. I will encourage you to experiment with new ways to get you unstuck. Having an intention and motivation is good, but it might not take you very far and you might be in the same place feeling stuck over and over again. Taking small actions through experimentation will help you gather real-time data from your own life with you being the scientist of your life. There is no failure in experimentation because you are simply learning what is and is not working for you. Learning about you in a new way will help shape your life as you want it to be. Doing something new can be scary and unnerving. I will support you to shift your attention to the process of change through your experimentation.

I believe every client has the inner strength to heal and grow. I want you to see your strengths as clearly as I do and feel empowered to amplify them.
